Historic Buildings
Specialising in the provision of suitably sympathetic solutions that improve the level of fire safety in Listed or Historic Buildings without detracting from, or destroying, the building features or characteristics that are considered worth saving.
Historic buildings normally do not comply with modern building standards, nor in many cases come close to having adequate fire protection when measured against today’s modern buildings.
Attempting to bring these buildings up to a reasonable standard may well destroy the very aesthetics most cherished in the building design or construction.
Appropriate fire engineered solutions can overcome this lack of fire protection and render the building safe without destroying those features.
Each Historic Building may present different issues that need to be resolved.
The areas of non-compliance may include any or all of these issues: -
· Combustible elements of construction;
· Restrictive escape routes;
· Stair enclosures that offer little or no fire resistance;
· Stairs that are too narrow or are too steep;
· Escape routes that do not follow the preferred sequence of travel
In many instances the building may have been constructed with defence in mind and not escape from fire.
